the ftc program
In 2016, our school started a robotics program for students in Years 7-9. This was the foundation laid out for students wishing to join the FRC team in a later stage of their school life. The FTC program started in July 2016 and consisted of students learning about robot features such as a Raspberry Pi, and programming Spheros using drag and drop blocks. The students had to complete tasks using Spheros such as navigating through a set path in the least amount of time. Each student also learnt about mechanical and electrical basics, such as using tools and safety procedures. The 60 students divided themselves into 8 new FTC teams, building their own robot and competing against each other at the Australian Regional. Three of the eight teams qualified for one of the World Championships in Houston for 2017.

In 2017, a few members from the FTC program travelled with the FRC students to China to compete in FRC. Here they had an insight into how big the competition was and the environment they would be in a couple years time. The students who travelled thoroughly enjoyed the trip. The FTC students also travelled to Houston to compete in the World Championships, after being placed in the Jemison Division. The team competed strongly and also supported our FRC team when needed.

The program started again in May 2017 for Year 7-9 in 2017. The previous Year 9 students are now proud members of the FRC team. The program is projected to continue to run in this format.
